The Lost Tomb of Zenopus

************
Campaign Information
Adventure Journals

This adventure will be ran for two of my players as a side adventure during our downtime. Don't think for a second that this adventure will be any less epic than our Temple of Elemental Evil campaign. It's just for fewer players so its a smaller scale adventure but it will still last for years. We are having trouble with our primary group having real life issues so in steps the Lost Tomb of Zenopus adventures.
************

Thirty years ago the dark Wizard Zenopus built a tower in the mountains overlooking the town of Gateway. The tower was built into the mountain side, north of Gateway itself and appropriately next to an ancient abandoned graveyard. Rumor has it that the Wizard made extensive cellars and tunnels underneath the tower and Zenopus was said to have excavated in his cellars in search of ancient treasures.

Five years ago, on a cold winters night, the wizard's tower was suddenly engulfed in a green flame. Several of the wizards human servants were said to have escaped the tower, saying there master had been destroyed by some powerful force that he had unleashed in the depths of the tower. Needless to say, the tower stood vacant for a while after this, but the residents of Gateway along with the night watchmen complained that ghostly blue lights had started appearing in the tower windows at night, that ghastly screams could be heard emanating from the tower at all hours, and goblin figures could be seen dancing on the tower roof in the moonlight. Finally the authorities had a catapult rolled through the streets of Gateway and the tower was battered to rubble. This stopped the hauntings but the townsfolk continue to shun the ruins. Rumor had it that Zenopus escaped his tower and retired down beneath the mountains into his tomb.

Not long ago a hidden entrance into the side of the mountain was found by a party of adventurers. They decided to explore this hidden entrance. Later only a single member of there group returned to Gateway, hysterical and out of his mind telling tales of demons and worst things. The entrance to the old dungeons is said to be located as a stone carved walkway leading into the Mountainside, the entrance is said to have a crimson glow about it giving off a dreadful aura. The few adventurous souls who have descended into the crypts below the ruins have failed to return at all.

Other wizards have since moved into town but the site of the old tower remains abandoned. Whispered tales are told of fabulous treasure and unspeakable monsters in the underground passages below the hilltop, and the story tellers are always careful to point out that the reputed dungeons lie in close proximity to an ancient graveyard.

The small but beautiful community of Gateway was founded years ago, roughly a few years before the fledgling hamlet of Hommlet to the southeast. The town is more of a crossroads than anything else, lying south of the mountains as well as the fabled Elves of Darkenwood, resting quietly near the Sentinel Peaks at the base of Gateway Pass.

It is also located just north of the Velverdyva River which runs slowly past the small town. Similar in many respects to Hommlet itself, the major difference is that all of the town shops and buildings are better stocked and more traveled. Gateway is governed by a Viscount.

Humans and non humans often seem to frequent this quiet town during there travels. A notable location in Gateway is the renowned Inn known as "The Maiden's Fancy" which is where the companions have gathered to discuss the expedition into the maze of tunnels beneath the ruined location of the former wizards tower. The Inn is quiet on this night with only a few other people sitting at various tables quietly enjoying there meals and beverages. With the coming winter which has already begun to settle in the region, there has been less traffic through Gateway than normal.

The companions have been residing in Gateway for several weeks, renting rooms at this very Inn while they have scouted this region, preparing for this adventure, into the ancient tunnels. After what seems like well over a week they all had decided the time has come to begin the journey into to the ruins of the Lost Tomb of Zenopus to seek out fame and fortune.

The Gates that allow access through Dragon's End Pass are a masterpiece of Dwarven engineering. Two enormous figures were crafted into the walls, symbolizing the passing of guarding and protecting Dragon's End Pass from the unspeakable evil that lies to the south. These gates have stood proud and vigilant since the changing of the guard. There is always a token force standing watch.

In the event of a hostile force approaching the outer gates, runners are sent back to Dragon's End Keep to sound the alarm and mobilize reinforcements. Scouts will easily spot any large force approaching and have plenty of time to report back and warn the Knights of impending trouble approaching the gates.

The fortress of Dragon’s End, better known as "Dragon’s End Keep" is built upon the western edge of the Great Mountains, standing as a lone sentinel to those who wish to cross the mountain pass it protects. The population of Dragon’s End is relatively small consisting of approximately 400 people, "mostly consisting of knights and militia" founded only 30 years ago. The location was founded when a Knight of Mythos, inspired by the sacrifice of Kellum Stormshield, defended a supply station against a blue dragon. The dragon met his end that day, hence the name Dragon's End came to be, and the supply station grew to be a small town and later transformed into a Fortress. The Knight of Mythos, Sir Gerrard, ruled for many years.

Sir Gerrard eventually relocated back to the capital city of Mythos ... Alaghon, turning over control of Dragon's End to Aeryn Silverheart, leader of the Knights of the Heart. Dragon's End has become the primary base of operations of the Knights of the Heart. The Knights of the Heart are now recognized as honorable allies of the Knights of Mythos, and are looked upon with favor from the population of Mythos. Aeryn Silverheart realizes that Dragon’s End is in a precarious situation, being the only defense of this pass. With the Mythos Knights pulling back into Mythos to fortify key positions, she is determined to hold the pass. In the event of an attack Aeryn Silverheart orders those who cannot fight to retreat through the mountain pass and out of harms way.

A surprising ally in the defense of Dragon’s End is Tasha, a Black Robe enchantress. Tasha pledged her support to Aeryn Silverheart on the condition that she will claim one of the towers of the city walls as her personal tower. Though uncomfortable with the situation, Aeryn Silverheart acknowledged that her magical prowess may help to turn the tide of a battle and agrees to the terms, but on the condition that she swear to never cause harm to the city and come to its defense when needed. Tasha agrees to the pact.

BACKGROUND
Aeryn Silverheart is the current leader of the Knights of the Heart. She is formerly a member of the Knights of Mythos. Aeryn became disillusioned with the Knights of Mythos. She felt that there should be more attention paid to aiding those who were victims to the forces of darkness, but she got caught up in politics and was unable to lend aid.

Aeryn soon left the Knights of Mythos, searching for the answers to the questions in her heart. Her Goddess visited Aeryn in a dream, in which Aeryn saw a new knighthood – one that was not so much a military organization, but more so a group of guardians and protectors, who were sworn to bring the power of healing to the world.

Aeryn dedicated herself to this vision, and soon the Knights of the Heart were born. Aeryn brought the basic ideals of honor to the Knights of the Heart, while tempering those ideals with compassion.

The Saturday Knights Crew

What is that music on your stream?
The music that plays during the actual episodes is a mixture from several sources. We almost exclusively use video game soundtracks and movie soundtracks, because they tend to have a very even "energy" across the entire song and loop well. We do not key in specific music for fight scenes or whatever, we usually try to keep our music generic and tranquil just to keep a mood set during our games. We also have a program that we use called Syrinscape which plays various scene music. It is a lot easier if you just go research Syrinscape here and see for yourselves.

How long have you been playing?
Two of the members of our group have been playing D&D since it was released 100 years ago, well not quite a 100 years ago but since it released as Basic D&D. These two players, James and Wendell never went past 2nd edition rules. The other other members have played for a while, unsure of the exact number of years but they have played most editions and can easily play any edition.

What edition are you playing of different games?
We play Classic Dungeons and Dragons with "some" house rules. We run Unearthed Arcana alongside with a splash of 2nd edition rules for spells and magical items. For our other games we usually play the standard rules for each of them
